Claregalway temporary bridges will be ready by March

THE OPW have given early March as the date for the opening of two temporary bridges of Claregalway to allow the permanent bridge at Claregalway Castle be closed temporarily for flood relief work.

It had initially been hoped that the temporary pontoon bridges would be in place before Christmas but the need for an extensive archaeological survey of the area before work could begin delayed matters.

The temporary roadway and bridges are being installed on the Claregalway Abbey side of the road.  This is being done to prevent major-disruption to traffic on the N17 which is one of the county’s busiest traffic arteries.

Over 30,000 vehicles pass through Claregalway on an average day and it was decided that the initial plan to put a stop-go system in place to the bridge was not feasible. (more…)

GIY January Newsletter

GIY January Newsletter

It doesn’t take much for me to start questioning my abilities as a GIYer at this time of the year. I wander around my veggie patch, poking at kale plants with a stick and feeling mightily peeved that there’s nothing much worth eating. And wondering, is there more I could have done? The frustrating thing is that there’s very little we can do to remedy this problem until next month when the first tentative sowings of the year can commence. January is an odd month for the GIYer – with the passing of the new year it feels like we should be doing stuff (and I guess there’s lots of preparatory work we can do), but there’s not really enough light or heat available to encourage seeds to germinate, and so we must wait…

From this juncture – the miserable affair that is January with its depressingly short days and insipid sun – it seems like a long time since the garden was abundant and trips to the super market were rare. In times past they had a lovely (more…)

Good news at last as construction of Claregalway bypass goes to tender

By Declan Tierney

THE long awaited bypass for Claregalway will be put out to tender next year with construction of the five kilometre stretch expected to begin in early 2012.

It is the Christmas present that the residents and the businesses in Claregalway had been hoping to receive for many years as progress on the project will be stepped up during the course of 2011.  Motorists travelling along the N17 on a regular basis will also be delighted with the progress.

And the Connacht Tribune has been told by senior officials in Galway County Council that if the property owners along the proposed route of the bypass had agreed to sell the lands required for the new road, it would have been built by now. (more…)

Treacy vindicated on promise to protect Portiuncula Hospital

The HSE has confirmed that Portiuncula Hospital will play a pivotal role in healthcare in the West, according to Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Noel Treacy.

Deputy Treacy secured assurances about the future of the facility at a cross-party meeting on hospital services in the region last week. The HSE revealed plans for a complete overhaul of healthcare in Galway and Roscommon to improve efficiency and safety for all patients. Under the “Integrated Network Configuration” plan, services will be spread out across UCHG, Merlin Park University Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital and Roscommon General Hospital, so patients will have more options to get the care they need without delay. New Grounds at Knockdoemore – A Lot Done in 2010

by Sean Flanagan and John Feeney

Since the start of the new millennium, the one full-size pitch that is available at Lakeview has become grossly over crowded due to the competing demands arising from 20 team panels, adult and underage. Also, over use has resulted in a deteriorating playing surface during spells of heavy rainfall. As a consequence and following a strategic review, the Club purchased 20 acres of land at Knockdoemore in 2009. The Club is committed to the delivery of actions that are required to fulfill the Club’s mission statement, that is, “to enhance the quality of life for youth and adults by providing appropriate facilities for sport and recreation to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding Claregalway community”. The Club’s ongoing development programme is summarised in this article. It will be shown that substantial progress was made during 2010 through the efforts of dedicated local volunteers, fund raising members and development service agencies. Financial grant aid from Cumann Luthcleas Gael underpins the main thrust of the new developments. (more…)

Claregalway flood relief work will not take place until after the New Year

Claregalway flood relief work will not take place until after the New Year

Works on the bridge in Claregalway and the provision of flood relief measures in the area will not take place until the New Year, it has emerged.

The works, which will involve the closure of the bridge in the village, had been due to take place last October but an archaeological dig in the area delayed the process.

It is understood that during the dig, some old coins were unearthed and the area had to be examined for other artifacts.
But when the works are completed it is expected that it will dramatically alleviate the flooding caused in the general Cregmore and Claregalway areas. (more…)

Waiting lists will never end under FF & Harney: 3,598 wait over 3 months in Galway Hospitals

Galway West Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has described the latest figures on hospital waiting lists in Galway published this week as proof, yet again, that the Health Minister and the Fianna Fáil Government have no ambition to end waiting lists.  Senator Healy Eames said Fine Gael has a different approach as the Party has a plan to permanently slash waiting lists through its FairCare policy. G.I.Y. Grow it Yourself Ireland

Introduction - It has been a tough start to December with arctic conditions prevailing and the veggie patch (and everything else) blanketed in up to a foot of the white stuff.  Still, the shortest day of the year is on the 21st of this month so if you’re a ‘glass half-full’ kind of person you can take some solace from the fact that from then on the days are starting to get longer and it’s only a matter of time before the new GIY season is upon us.  Just as the harvest brings with it both joy and a measure of pathos at the impending winter, the arrival of winter brings, strangely, a sense of hope that it will soon be spring.
