17 Mar 2011 Motorists face huge delays as Claregalway gets its new bridge
There will be huge delays in Claregalway from Monday next and for the next eight weeks as the new bridge is put in place.
But here has been much local disappointment that so much money is being spent on a job that will only half solve a problem.
The bridge will be widened at Claregalway to allow more water to go through that will possibly stop the road from being blocked again, but no provisions have been made to let it go to the Corrib faster with a greater risk of flooding to the people in Montiagh and Curraghmore areas.
Many feel that the amount that is being used for this bridge should have been used to provide a new bridge for the planned relief road that is much more badly needed for Claregalway and will likely be put back further on the long finger with this money already used up in this project.
It is likely that all the rat runs in the area will be used during the construction of the new bridge and many of these roads are already in very bad repair and are in urgent need of funding on the surface after the severe winter.

09 Mar 2011 Black Bart’s split skull found in Claregalway archaeological dig
I was talking to my friend the archaeologist, we call him Matt the Digger, because that’s what archaeologists do. They dig holes and find all sorts of treasure and things from the past. Some job, eh!
Well he was telling me he was working on the new bridges at Claregalway and they came across a gruesome find. A skeleton. A skeleton that had been killed by a battle axe, by the looks of it.
That’s part of archaeology I wouldn’t like. Skeletons give me the creeps.
Anyway, Matt told me they think the skeleton is that of Black Bart O’Flaherty, the meanest pirate who ever sailed the Connemara coast. He was even worse than the Pirate Queen Granuaile who was said to chop off the head of a prisoner every day after breakfast. (more…)

07 Mar 2011 Thought for the Week – Selfless service to others – Ronan Scully
Ever notice how really good you feel after doing something good for another person? When we perform a selfless act without any expectation, it can be so satisfying. Often after we make a difference in the life of another, we ask ourselves why we haven’t done it more often. Our act of selfless service might involve a kind word or lending an ear to a person who could use it. It could be holding the door open for a person we don’t know. Or even as simple as smiling to someone with whom we interact. We can help in many ways. When somebody is in need and we’re open, there comes an impulse from inside us. It’s at that instant in time, when we can choose to act upon it, or not. That moment tends to go by in a flash. Thoughts of a busy day ahead, or perhaps uncertainty, sometimes might sneak in and cloud our decision to move forward. And then it’s passed. (more…)

02 Mar 2011 Two months of delays as temporary bridges at Claregalway set to open
Commuters can expect two months of traffic disruption on the N17 from the last week of March while flood relief work is carried out on Claregalway bridge.
However, a warning has been issued that all the flood relief projects such as these will be put “in the halfpenny place” if Lough Corrib is allowed clog up with pondweed, which could result in recurring flooding on a scale never seen before.
Two temporary bridges are now in place and ready for use. They are designed to ensure traffic flow on the N17 continues as smoothly as possible but the expectation is that Claregalway will become an even greater bottleneck for the two-month period. (more…)

01 Mar 2011 Yellowwood
What is possible?
In short, I firmly believe that anything is possible. Many people in everyday life and throughout history have achieved magnificent feats despite not having widespread support. You may remember a time of your own when people challenged your idea and you persisted anyway, and still you succeeded without their support. When you reflect on this, you may recall the personal attributes that you had to achieve your feat – self belief, determination, persistence, action, empowerment and positive intention towards a goal. These attributes are crucial to making any feat possible. I once heard the saying (more…)

25 Feb 2011 Claregalway Castle Project
The Barony of Clare had 33 castles at time of the 1585 survey. The 2 principal demesnes were Claregalway and Corofin. Both protect major crossings of Clare river on road linking Galway city with North and East and share many similarities (portcullis revetment, box machioli on all 4 sides etc). The Annals of 4 Masters record the building of Clanrickards Castle at Corofin in1451. Recent C14 dates provide evidence for Annaghdown’s construction in 1440’s. Dating for CGC pending.
In 1433 Pope Eugene IV grants indulgence of 4 years and 4 quarantines to CG Abbey to support an extensive building programme including Belfry. Many similarities between this phase of masonry work at Abbey and that of Castle.
Yet again ClareGalway Castle is very much a work in progress and we hope to keep interested parties informed of progress and developments through this website and the media. (more…)
