Angry flooding victims want to know why houses are still being granted permission on flood plains

GALWAY County Council officials have been asked to explain why they are continuing to give permission for the construction of new houses on flood plains after three Claregalway families who were forced to abandon their homes received a sympathetic hearing at the European Parliament this week.

After hearing of the hardship cases endured by the three families, European officials have asked the local authority to explain how it failed to deal with their needs after they were forced to flee their homes in the flooding of November 2009.

The families themselves are said to be continuing to grant permission for the construction of new homes in the Caherlea area where 13 families were forced to move out during the severe flooding 17 months ago. (more…)

Claire Greaney – World Championship Dancer

Irish dancing has undergone a transformational makeover during the last twenty years. Traditional dress, natural hair and pale faces appear less often at competitions.  Irish dancers, who are serious about their sport are now training like professional athletes, with most of them at the peak of physical fitness and passionate about becoming the best in the world.

To be the world’s greatest is an achievement that most people dream about. Few realise their dream and prove that they are the best in show.  Claregalway girl, Claire Greaney is one such lady.  A pupil of the Hession school in Galway, Claire, aged 20, has proven four times in succession that she is the World’s best Irish dancer. Consultants appointed to progress work on new Claregalway bypass

With the prospects of the Gort to Tuam motorway not proceeding for several years, it has been confirmed that consultant engineers have been appointed to progress the Claregalway bypass.

And there are high hopes that the compulsory purchase of lands required for the road could commence in late summer or early autumn.

Is this is the case then construction of the 15 million route commence in early 2012 and would be completed before the end of the year.

With the M17/M18 motorway now in jeopardy because of a lack of confidence in investing in such a large roads project in this country, the focus of attention has now firmly switched to the Claregalway bypass.

Galway West TD Noel Grealish has been informed that RPS Consulting Engineers have been appointed to prepare the compulsory purchase documentation and progress this to an oral hearing in Claregalway. (more…)

Operation Transformation’s (& local resident) Ronan Scully Enjoying Life’s Journey at the North Pole Marathon

Last weekend, I ran a marathon in the North Pole. For anyone unfamiliar with the marathon distance, it’s 26.2 miles, and a really long way to run and seems even longer when you’re running it on snow at minus 35 degrees. Though the marathon might be considered just an athletic event by some, from my experience over the weekend I would refer to it as an allegory for life. So, what life lessons can one learn from running a marathon or any specific challenge that we do in life?

It’s about the Journey, not the end result
Running a marathon reinforced to me the idea that in life, it’s about the journey, not the end result. As I ran, I realized that this might be the only time that I would ever run a marathon, so I needed to savor the experience. I thought, “This is it, the moment I have worked so hard for on RTE’s Operation Transformation programme.” I needed to enjoy the marathon experience, not wish it away and especially because it was at the North Pole and what an experience it was with many epiphanies and very spiritual moments at the top of the world where you could almost reach up and touch heaven. Often we wish our lives away, wanting to reach a certain place in life in order to be happy. However, oftentimes the satisfaction derived from setting an objective is not so much in attaining the objective, but in the anticipation and striving toward the objective. So, as much as possible try to enjoy the journey as much as the end results as I did with my North Pole marathon attempt. (more…)
