Claregalway Second-level School Campaign

THE committee involved in the campaign for a new Second-level school for Claregalway has been very successful in the 10 months since it began its work last year. In January the Department of Education announced the official approval/recognition of the school for Claregalway and in March began the process of site acquisition when the advertised for tenders/proposals from local landowners. Several submissions have been made and the Department is now reviewing these proposals.

The committee has been focused from the start on the establishment of the new school in temporary accommodation as soon as possible. This would not interfere with the new build process, which will take a number of years. Informal proposals to provide temporary accommodation received a serious response from the Department. The committee will be refining and submitting formal proposals to the Department within the coming weeks. We are requesting confirmation of a proposed start date of September 2012. (more…)

Seven sites for school in Claregalway-but unlikely before 2016

A TOTAL of seven sites have been offered to the Department of Education to provide a new secondary school in Claregalway – the sites will be examined by officials over the next twelve months.
But hopes for the enrolement of first year students at the school next September have been dashed by the Department who say that it is unlikely that a new school would be possible before 2016.
However, there has been some progress in the matter with the confirmation by the Department that the seven sites offered by landowners in the Claregalway area would be examined over the coming year and the most suitable and cost effective tie will then be chosen.

Local TD Noel Grealish explained that the Department had sought expressions of interest from local people and there was a good response with seven landowners offering sites for the school.
“It would be great to see a new school in Claregalway given the student population that there is within even a five mile radius of the village. (more…)

My Wise Irish Life

Marriage, Munchkins, Money & Muck

by Móna Wise

Being asked to write a piece for the Nuacht Chláir is an honour and I am proud to submit a few ‘Wise Words’ whenever a space filler is needed. Being asked to write something for the Nuacht Chláir about myself and my life, now that is a little daunting.

I mean, don’t you know enough about the ongoings at our house already? Can’t you hear me roaring at the kids every morning as we race around the kitchen chasing our tails looking for lunchbox lids and missing shoes? Yes, I am that mother and no, I will not apologise for my raised octaves.

It is all my Mother’s (Catherine Dempsey) fault, really. I like to hold people accountable for their actions. But before I get into deciding what her punishment should be let me tell you how I ended up finding my very happy and content ‘Wise Irish Life’ right here where I left it when I moved away from home seventeen years ago. Thought for the Week – ‘Treat others the way you would like to be treated’

I love true and inspirational type stories as they can inspire us and help us and god knows we need a lot of inspiration in our life and in our world today. The following true story will give you great inspiration for the days ahead.

True Story

‘One stormy night many years ago, an elderly man and his wife entered the lobby of a small hotel in Philadelphia. Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get some shelter for the night. “Could you possibly give us a room here?” the husband asked. The clerk, a friendly man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conventions in town. (more…)

Green Sod Land Trust’s Summer 2011 eNews

1) ‘Giving Back to Nature’ : a celebration to mark the gift of land to Green Sod Land Trust

To mark the donation of the first piece of land to Green Sod Land Trust, benefactor David Rowe, directors, volunteers and supporters of Green Sod Land Trust gathered with the local community in Red Bog, Co. Carlow on April 16th 2011. The seventy people who attended left their cars in Clonmore and walked the half mile boreen to the celebration, in order to reduce the impact on the local environment. As the sun shone brightly on the garden in Red Bog, Sheila Gallagher, chairperson of the Trust, welcomed everybody to the historic occasion and emphasized the importance of saving natural habitats for all species. Will Paton, chairman of Carlow County Council, expressed his delight in attending and invited people to be still for a moment to listen to the voice of nature, and one and all delighted in the chorus of birdsong which ensued. Mary Collier, president of Carlow ICA, read a very apt poem and thanked the Trust for what it is doing in Carlow. (more…)

On Sunday the 17th April the Claregalway Cub Scouts met with 11 other groups from around Galway city and county to participate in a seashore explorers hike on Flaggy Shore in Co. Clare. On the day there were experts from the Marine Institute and we had access to a research lab thanks to NUIG. The cubs learned about life in the sea, both ancient and modern. They took samples of sea water to test in the lab. They also got a chance to learn about the birds that live in the local area. All this while hiking around Loch Muiri and across the beautiful limestone shore that overlooks Galway bay. (more…)
