Bronze Medal for Galway Rower at World Cup Regatta

Three Galway rowers were in action at the prestigious Lucerne Regatta, third of the World Cup series, this past weekend. Tribesmen’s Siobhán McCrohan earned a Bronze medal in the Lightweight Single Scull; NUIG’s Niall Kenny was one place off bronze in the Lightweight Quad Scull, and Tribesmen’s Lisa Dilleen featured in the Double Scull.

The Lucerne Regatta, set in a scenic sheltered valley in northern Switzerland, has garnered the reputation for being possibly the most prestigious regatta in the world. As a result, it attracts the best of the best from across the globe.

Into that scene is competing a young Irish squad whose members are mostly in the 22-24 age-group. Their objective was to see how they matched up to the world’s best in preparation for the World Championships in August and the U23 championships in July. (more…)

Out and About with 12th Galway, Claregalway, Scouts June-July 2011

On the 19th and 20th of June the Claregalway Scouts took part in a county overnight hike in Killaloe, Co Clare. This was the first time the county used this route, in previous years they have been to Connemara and Mayo. Saturday morning was spent hiking to and setting up a base camp, then going off on the pre-planned course to arrive back in camp later that evening. They then hiked back out on the Sunday morning.

The Cubs took part in the county camp on the 10th-12th June in Portlick, Co Westmeath. The camp was a fantastic success, with over 320 cubs from around Galway attending. We also had the privilege of the Chief Scout visiting the site. The activities included kayaking, archery, zip wire, crate stacking, water activities, and an obstacle course. There was also hammock making, wall climbing, games, survival shelter building, making ropes from nettles and cups from coconuts. On Saturday evening each group put on a culture fair and a talent show representing different countries from around the world. The night finished up singing around the camp fire.

The Beavers finished up their year with a visit to Claregalway Castle, where they were given a guided tour of the building and a party afterwards. (more…)

Thought for the week – Paving the way – Ronan Scully

Thought for the week – Paving the way
One thing that I have noticed from my many years living in Africa and Asia is that in tribal cultures the elderly play an important role. They are the keepers of that cultures memories and the holders of wisdom. As such, the elderly are honored and respected members of those societies and cultures because they have paved the way for the future for their young.

Valuing our Elderly
In many modern cultures, however, this is often not the case, especially when we see and read lately of how some of our elderly have been treated so appallingly in some elderly homes or establishments. (more…)

Internship scheme will benefit jobseekers and businesses alike

Galway companies and applicants to benefit.

Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has urged Galway companies to get involved in the Government’s new internship scheme, which will provide 5,000 places for people who are unemployed and are struggling to access the jobs market.

“In the current climate, you can’t get a job, without experience, and you can’t gain experience without getting a leg in the door of a company – this scheme breaks that vicious cycle. On the other hand, companies will benefit from the new blood, creativity and enthusiasm coming into them.

The range of companies and organisations based in Galway – either community, voluntary, private or public – (more…)

Galway Garden Festival set to rock the Castle walls – again

Galway has a multiplicity of festivals, all honed over the years into something special. But none of these made the instant impact that the Galway Garden Festival did when it was inaugurated last year, over two days of differing climatic conditions at the beautifully-restored Claregalway Castle.

The thousands who thronged to the Castle for that event knew it was something special – for the first time in centuries, people moved in droves on its grounds and now it is to happen all over again with this year’s festival to run over two days on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10.

It was a tremendous event which breathed new life into the village, but which also created a wealth of funding for the Irish charity which treats blindness and debilitating eye conditions in many areas of the developing world. (more…)

Hopes high for Claregalway College to be teaching by 2013

HOPES are high that Claregalway could have a Community College by 2013 but many factors, including getting a site and jumping the hurdles of any planning objections, will determine if this deadline is met.

A Community College has been mooted for several years to cater for 850 to 1,000 students in an area of rapid population growth.

Campaigners met with local politicians in the Claregalway Hotel on Monday the 20th June last and the matter was also raised at a meeting of County Galway VEC (Vocational Education Committee) earlier that day.

Speakers at both meetings expressed the hope that enrolment in the Claregalway School could begin in September 2013.

The meeting heard that a letter from Labour TD Derek Nolan had indicated that the school would open in September 2013.  But it was hoped that this could be confirmed in writing by the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn as soon as possible. (more…)
