Claregalway U-21 Off to a Winning Start

Claregalway U-21 footballers had a comfortable win over Annaghdown in their first North Board A Championship match of 2011 played at sunny Annaghdown on Sunday Feb. 13th. The score was 1-11 to 0-5. This was a good all-round team display in a free flowing game and Claregalway always looked likely winners from start to finish. A feature of the game was to see all 15 team players working so well to help one another and combining to get the scores – all six forwards scored. Claregalway led at half-time by 0-6 to 0-2. When Annaghdown pressed hard early in the second half to cut the Claregalway lead, goalie Eoin Clarke saved a pile driver at close range to divert the out for a 45′.
Team panel: Eoin Clarke, Keith McDermott, Michael Evans, Michael Brennan, Colm O’Hagan (0-1), Conor Costelloe, Hubert Newell, David Hansberry, Michael Noonan (0-1), Peter Divilly (0-3), Mathew Moran (0-1), Sean Moran (0-1), Danny Cummins (0-1), Eoin Commins (0-2, frees), Gerry Cheevers (1-1), Robert Moran, Donal McGreal, Ciaran Harte, Diarmuid Gavin, Emmett Feeney, Michael Igoe,  Colm Brennan, Donal Conroy, John Evans, Ryan Harrington, Michael Martin Coyle, Shane Divilly, Jason Byrne.

G.A.A. Annual Social

The GAA Club will be holding its annual social on Sat 19th Feb in the Claregalway Hotel. We are delighted to say that Paul & Nora Gill have again agreed to sponsor the night thus providing us the opportunity to raise money from the proceeds. We are looking for a big turnout because we have plans to do some work at the grounds in Lakeview and this will be a huge help in doing that.

The format for this years event has changed from other years. We have a schedule of events drawn up and we will adhere to the agreed format. A number of presentations will be made as usual with no speeches. We intend to do these during the meal and between courses. The U14 All-Ireland Team Management and the County Minor Winning Team of 20 years ago will be in attendance. If you were part of that Minor squad please contact Joe O’Connell for details.

The honour of saying a few words will be reserved to the winner of our “Hall Of Fame” award. (more…)

New Grounds at Knockdoemore – A Lot Done in 2010

by Sean Flanagan and John Feeney

Since the start of the new millennium, the one full-size pitch that is available at Lakeview has become grossly over crowded due to the competing demands arising from 20 team panels, adult and underage. Also, over use has resulted in a deteriorating playing surface during spells of heavy rainfall. As a consequence and following a strategic review, the Club purchased 20 acres of land at Knockdoemore in 2009. The Club is committed to the delivery of actions that are required to fulfill the Club’s mission statement, that is, “to enhance the quality of life for youth and adults by providing appropriate facilities for sport and recreation to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding Claregalway community”. The Club’s ongoing development programme is summarised in this article. It will be shown that substantial progress was made during 2010 through the efforts of dedicated local volunteers, fund raising members and development service agencies. Financial grant aid from Cumann Luthcleas Gael underpins the main thrust of the new developments. (more…)
